Laptop touchpad not working? Causes and simple fixes

A touchpad that stops responding is usually switched off, confused by a setting or missing its driver. Here is how to tell which, starting with free checks.

When the pointer stops moving, most people decide the touchpad has broken and start pricing a replacement. Usually it has not. A touchpad is a flat sensor that reports finger positions to the laptop through a thin cable and a driver. A key press, a setting or a missing driver can cut that report off completely while the pad itself is perfectly healthy. So the first job is not finding a repair shop. It is working out which link in that short chain has stopped passing the signal along.

Frozen pointer, or only some actions failing?

Start by noticing exactly what has stopped. If the pointer will not move at all, the laptop is probably not receiving anything from the pad, which points to a switch, a disabled setting or the driver. If the pointer moves but tapping does nothing, the pad works and only the tap-to-click option is off. If scrolling with two fingers or other gestures fail while single-finger movement is fine, the gesture settings are at fault. Each pattern sends you to a different place, so it saves a lot of guessing.

The off switch you may have pressed

Most laptops can turn the touchpad off from the keyboard, usually with the Fn key and one of the top-row keys marked with a small touchpad picture. It is easy to press by accident while reaching for volume or brightness. Some laptops show a tiny light on the corner of the pad when it is disabled. There is often a second trap in the touchpad settings too: an option that switches the pad off whenever a mouse is connected. A forgotten USB receiver left in a port can trigger it.

How the pad senses your finger

Most touchpads ignore pressure when tracking. Under its surface sits a grid of electrodes, and your finger changes the electrical charge between them at the spot you touch. Anything else that changes that charge confuses it. Wet or oily fingers, lotion, or a film of grime can make the pointer jump or ignore you. Electrical noise from a poorly made or non-original charger can do the same, which is why some touchpads misbehave only while plugged in. Try unplugging the charger and wiping the pad with a dry cloth.

When the driver is the cause

If the pad stopped straight after a system update, the driver that translates its signals may have been replaced or damaged. Plug in a USB mouse so you can work, then open the device manager. The touchpad is usually listed under mice and other pointing devices or under human interface devices. Uninstall that entry and restart, and the laptop loads a fresh copy on its own. If the problem began with an update, rolling that update back is also worth trying, and it costs nothing.

A pad that is lifting is a warning

On most laptops the battery sits directly underneath the touchpad. If the pad has started to feel stiff, the click has gone mushy, or one edge now sits higher than the palm rest, the battery below may be swelling and pushing it upward. This is not a touchpad fault and it should not be ignored. Shut the laptop down, unplug it and stop using it. A swollen battery must be replaced by a technician, and you should never press the case back down.

  • Pointer frozen completely: check the Fn toggle, settings and the driver first.
  • Pointer moves but taps and gestures fail: review the touchpad gesture settings.
  • Pad raised, stiff or mushy to click: stop using it and get the battery checked.

What to try, in order

  1. Restart the laptop, because a driver that failed to load often recovers on a fresh start.
  2. Press the Fn key with the touchpad key on the top row to switch the pad back on.
  3. Open the touchpad settings and turn the pad on, along with tap to click and gestures.
  4. Turn off the option that disables the touchpad when a mouse or USB receiver is connected.
  5. Unplug the charger and wipe the pad with a dry cloth while the laptop is switched off.
  6. Uninstall the touchpad entry in the device manager and restart so a fresh driver loads.
  7. If the pad still fails or looks raised, take the laptop to a service centre or technician.

What to take from this

Before assuming the worst, plug in a mouse and check what the touchpad is actually doing. A pointer that is completely frozen usually means a toggle, a setting or a driver, and all three cost nothing to fix at home. Partial failures point to gesture settings or a dirty surface. The one sign that needs a technician straight away is a pad that is being pushed upward, because that is the battery underneath.

Common questions

Why did my laptop touchpad suddenly stop working?

The most common cause is the touchpad being switched off, either with the Fn key shortcut or by a setting that disables it when a mouse is connected. A driver that failed after an update is the next likely cause. Check the shortcut and settings first, then reinstall the touchpad entry from the device manager and restart.

Why does my touchpad move but not click?

If the pointer moves, the sensor and its driver are working. Tapping to click is a separate option, and it is often turned off in the touchpad settings after an update or reset. Turn tap to click back on. If pressing the pad down physically also fails, the click mechanism underneath may be worn or blocked by dirt.

Can I keep using my laptop if the touchpad is broken?

Yes. A USB or Bluetooth mouse works on almost any laptop without setup, so you can carry on as normal while you decide what to do. The exception is a touchpad that is lifting or bulging. That points to a swelling battery underneath, and the laptop should not be used until it is checked.

Why does my laptop screen look blurry?

A laptop screen that looks soft is nearly always running at the wrong resolution or at a scaling level an app does not understand. Here is how to tell those apart from a dirty panel or a failing cable.
