TV not turning on? What the standby light tells you

A TV that will not switch on is often a remote, a socket or a stuck standby state. Learn to read the red light and when the power board is to blame.

When a TV will not turn on, most people assume the panel has failed and the set is finished. Very often the screen is fine. A TV needs power from the socket, a working power board inside, and a clear command from you before a picture appears. A flat remote battery, a switched-off extension board or a TV stuck in standby breaks that chain just as surely as a burnt part. The small light at the base of the screen is your best clue to where.

Read the standby light first

The standby light tells you whether power is reaching the TV. If it glows steadily, electricity is getting in and the TV is waiting for a command, so the remote or the screen is the likely problem. If there is no light at all, either no power is arriving from the socket or the power board inside has stopped working. If the light changes colour or flickers when you press power but no picture appears, the TV is trying to start and something later in that process is failing.

The remote and its batteries

A remote with weak batteries can still light up its buttons but send a signal too faint to reach the TV. Press the power button on the TV itself, usually found under the bottom edge or at the back. If the TV starts that way, the remote is the problem. Fresh batteries fix most cases. You can also point the remote at a phone camera and press a button. Many cameras show a faint flash from the tip, which proves the remote is sending a signal.

Socket, extension board and a power drain

With no standby light, check the supply before blaming the TV. Plug a lamp or a phone charger into the same socket. If that does not work either, the socket, the switch on the wall or a surge protector is the cause, and many surge protectors switch themselves off after a power spike. If the socket works, try a full power drain. Unplug the TV, hold its power button for a while to empty leftover charge, wait a few minutes, then plug it straight into the wall.

On but showing black, or truly off?

A TV can be running with a completely black screen. Listen for sound, and check whether the standby light goes out or changes when you press power. If the set box is off or the TV is on the wrong input, you get a black screen too, so press the input or source button. Then shine a torch close to the screen. If you can faintly see menus or a picture, the backlight that lights the panel has failed, which a technician can usually replace.

  • No light at all: check the socket and surge protector before the TV.
  • Steady red light, no response: test the TV's own button and remote batteries.
  • Sound but black screen: a torch test points to a failed backlight.

Blinking codes and power board failure

A standby light that blinks in a repeating pattern is often the TV reporting a fault it found while starting. Count the blinks between pauses and look the pattern up in the user manual or on the maker's support page. Repeated clicking, a light that comes on then dies, or no light even on a working socket usually points to the power board. That board holds parts that can keep a charge even when unplugged, so never open the TV yourself. Call a technician.

What to try, in order

  1. Press the power button on the TV itself to rule out the remote, which costs nothing.
  2. Replace the remote's batteries and check it sends a signal using a phone camera.
  3. Plug a lamp into the same socket to confirm the socket and surge protector are giving power.
  4. Unplug the TV, hold its power button, wait a few minutes and plug it directly into the wall.
  5. Press the input or source button and try a torch on the screen to check for a picture.
  6. Count any blinking pattern on the standby light and look it up in the user manual.
  7. If there is still no picture, call a technician or service centre to check the power board.

What to take from this

Before you decide the TV is dead, look at the standby light. A steady light means power is arriving, so test the remote and the TV's own button. No light means check the socket and surge protector, then try a full power drain. A torch test separates a dead backlight from a TV that is truly off. If the light blinks in a pattern or never comes on, a technician should check the power board.

Common questions

Why is my TV not turning on but the red light is on?

A steady red light means power is reaching the TV and it is in standby, waiting for a command. The usual cause is a remote with weak batteries or a signal that is not reaching the sensor. Press the button on the TV itself. If nothing happens, unplug it for a few minutes and try again.

How do I reset a TV that will not turn on?

Do a full power drain. Unplug the TV from the wall, press and hold its own power button for a while to empty any leftover charge, and wait a few minutes before plugging it back in. Plug it straight into the wall rather than an extension board, then press the power button on the TV.

Why does my TV have sound but no picture?

The TV is on, so the problem is the picture rather than the power. First press the input or source button in case it is on the wrong input. Then shine a torch close to the screen. If you see a faint image, the backlight has failed, which a technician can usually replace without changing the panel.

Why does my laptop screen look blurry?

A laptop screen that looks soft is nearly always running at the wrong resolution or at a scaling level an app does not understand. Here is how to tell those apart from a dirty panel or a failing cable.
