What decides it at this price

Fifty thousand is the band where you buy into a system rather than a camera. A body here is either an entry mirrorless or a late-generation DSLR, both with an APS-C sensor, and both will outlast the kit lens that comes with them — which is the honest reason the lens matters more than the body. The 18–55 mm in the box is sharp enough in good light and gives up quickly in poor light, because its widest aperture closes as you zoom.

Autofocus generation is what separates two bodies at the same price, not resolution. A sensor with phase-detection points across its whole surface tracks a moving subject; an older system with a handful of central points does not, and no amount of megapixels compensates. If the subject is children, pets or anything in a sport, this is the specification to compare and the one review videos actually test.

Budget beyond the body. A second lens — a cheap 50 mm prime, or a longer zoom — changes the pictures far more than a better body would, and so does a fast memory card if you intend to shoot bursts or video. Mirrorless bodies also run their sensor and screen continuously, so plan on a spare battery; a DSLR with an optical viewfinder will outlast it on one charge.
